About Al-Anon/Alateen Family Groups

The primary purpose of Al-Anon/Alateen is to help families and friends of alcoholics.

What is Al-Anon?

Al-Anon's program of recovery is based on the Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions as adapted from Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). Al-Anon is not allied with any sect, denomination, political entity, organization, or institution; does not engage in any controversy, neither endorses nor opposes any cause.

Al-Anon Meetings are free, anonymous and confidential. There are no dues for membership. Al-Anon is self supporting through its own voluntary contributions.

WHO ARE WE?

Al-Anon unites members of different ages, backgrounds, races, and walks of life in an inspiring endeavor: helping themselves and others to lead purposeful, useful lives by overcoming the frustration and helplessness caused by close association with an alcoholic.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

The message of Al-Anon is one of hope. It is the story of men, women and children who once felt helpless, lost, and lonely because of another's alcoholism. Today these men, women, and children have courage and confidence. They have found understanding friends. They have learned what to do to help themselves - and this can indirectly help their alcoholic relatives, loved ones, and friends, whether sober or not.

  • As a reminder, in Al-Anon, we do not give advice. In Al-Anon we share our experience, strength, and hope with one another. We tell of our experiences and how we have been affected by the disease of alcoholism; we share our strength and hope with others and how the Al-Anon program has helped us find solutions to our problems, and how our lives have changed thanks to Al-Anon.

  • We encourage you to come to at least 6 meetings to learn “how Al-Anon works”. The meetings are an important part of your recovery, as is the phone list in order to talk to others between meetings.

  • Anonymity is the spiritual foundation of all our Traditions, ever reminding us to place principles above personalities.

At the personal level, the traditions of anonymity provide an environment of trust, confidence and equality to all Al-Anon and Alateen members.

At the public level, Al-Anon respectfully asks members of the media not to identify any A.A., Al-Anon, or Alateen speaker or member by full name or picture in published or broadcast reports of our meetings. The assurance of anonymity is essential to our efforts to help other families and friends of alcoholics, and our Tradition of Anonymity reminds us that Al-Anon and Alateen principles come before personalities.
